Common Questions for Custom Home Builders
We welcome and encourage your questions because a custom home, a remodel, or an addition is a big project. Below are some of the most common questions we’re asked and our responses.
Yes, we are well known for building award-winning custom homes, turning your plans into thoughtful, delightful, and comfortable spaces that fulfill your vision for your home. As third-generation builders and named Builder of the Year 2020 by the Asheville Home Builders Association, our experience as custom home builders in and around Asheville, including communities like Mountain Air, Town Mountain Preserve, and Montreat, offers unprecedented value and advantage to our clients.
We do whole home renovations, kitchen and bath renovations, and outdoor living space renovations. Adding onto a home is often a part of the renovation work as well). We also help business owners renovate and update their workspace, such as doctors’ offices, retail stores, and veterinary offices. Check out some of our renovation work here on our portfolio.
We will be glad to speak with you about remodeling your kitchen. Our ability to take on single-room renovations depends on our staff and project capacity at the time, so it’s best to connect with us to see what’s possible. In fact, we recently completed this award-winning kitchen renovation.
The time it takes to build a new custom home or renovate a house or kitchen is truly project-specific, and it often depends on the project size and budget. Part of our process is to provide and manage a comprehensive schedule based on milestones during construction. This schedule ensures there is a clear understanding of the scope of work and where we are in the build process. From our perspective, it’s important to us that clients have schedule and cost transparency. Learn more about our process including setting the timeline.
Short answer: Yes. You need house plans to build a custom home, and you can get house plans from a variety of places. You can work with an architect to draw house plans based on your unique vision for your home, or you can purchase construction-ready house plans online or from us. Many clients have scoured the internet to find the perfect house plans, and we made a few customizations to the plans so that the home was truly unique to them. We have a small library of house plans that you’re welcome to review.
If your goal is to build a dream home that is truly a unique reflection of your style and preferences for how you want your home to look and function, then working with an architect is the best way to achieve that goal. It’s also important to bring us into the design process so that we can help align your dream with your preferred budget. Our goal is to build your vision on time and on budget, and collaboration between your architect and us is a key component to success.
The cost to build a custom home varies widely depending upon materials costs and the size of the home, with the cost-per-square-foot starting at about $400 and exceeding $2,000 per square foot in some instances. Whether a custom home is more expensive to build, it’s really a matter of perspective and your budget. What really matters is realistic expectations of what you can do within your preferred budget. We do our best to steward your budget as if it were our own, and that’s why it is important to bring us while designing the home. We want you to have all of the bells and whistles, too, in your custom home, and we do our best to guide how to do that within your budget.
Many of our clients chose to invest with cash to build their custom home, while others choose to obtain a construction loan. We recommend speaking to your financial advisor to determine which way makes the best financial sense for you. We can’t speak for other Asheville custom home builders, but our clients have complete transparency into the cost of building a custom home. They approve every estimate and can follow the numbers in our project management system. We do it this way to prevent surprises and to ensure we’re building your vision on budget and on time.
That’s a great question, and more people should ask it. Many people think it is as simple as buying some land, buying house plans, and then getting to work building the home. In reality, the construction process is fairly complex with a number of key steps and important milestones. When working with us, you can expect a partner in your vision. Our goal is to build your dream home, and partnering with your architect and your interior designer make that possible. You can also expect consistent, proactive communication from us about status, decisions to make, and schedule shifts. As part of the process, we provide a detailed timeline, regular progress updates and photos, and regular budget updates.
We can give you a ballpark of costs to build your project at no cost to you to make sure your project is possible. Once we agree to move forward together, we will provide a much more detailed, construction-ready, and transparent cost estimate.
