Featured Project: A Classic Cottage
We’re thrilled to be in the final trim stages of this charming, custom-built cottage and that means the clients will soon be moving into their new home. When complete, this four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom custom home located near Montreat College will fit seamlessly into the vernacular that is quintessentially Montreat.
Classic Cottage Characteristics
Cottage-style, river stone, subdued colors, and ample porches are just a few of the hallmark characteristics found among the many generations of homes in the small, idyllic Western North Carolina town. Tucked into a cove of the Black Mountains, Montreat is filled with thick forests, rich vegetation, and lush gardens that make it a perfect location for a primary or vacation home.
With its classic cottage styling, this custom home features a wide and welcoming covered front porch. Clad in hardy clapboard siding, the home’s exterior takes a cue from the creeks and waterways in the area with the river rock accents along the porch foundation. Originally designed to feature brick accents, the owners decided on smooth, rounded two-inch river rock instead of brick to bring a natural aesthetic to the home that felt more authentic for the area.
Classic Cottage Features
The main level features:
- A warm entryway opening to a well-equipped kitchen and great room. With plentiful storage and counterspace, this kitchen will certainly become the central gathering space for years to come.
- A great room that includes a dining area and a large and cozy living area anchored by a river rock clad fireplace. Sliding glass doors open to a covered porch that overlooks the back yard.
- A primary bedroom suite located off a small central hall, creating a sense of privacy and luxury, while also taking advantage of a popular and beneficial trend in custom homes today – one level living for aging in place.
- A powder room located off the central hall.
Two secondary bedrooms and a bathroom are up a flight of stairs. Large dormers in each bedroom are the perfect spot for a tucked-away reading nook and study area. Both bedrooms offer plenty of space for a growing family. The lower level of the home includes another bedroom, full bathroom, and a great room, as well as additional rooms for storage and the home’s mechanical systems. A covered terrace off the great room is a perfect spot to unwind.
We are looking forward to handing over the keys to the owners in the next few months in time for them to enjoy the summer in Montreat.
